Statement of purpose:
ModemNews Magazine has decided to take on a project that is
certain to be of value and interest to many diverse interests, the
first concise census of BBS systems in existence on September 1, 1992.
We began this project to answer some basic questions that have
never been answered before. Such as;
1) How many on-line services are there today?
a) for profit or hobby
b) commercial or private
c) special interests
d) equipment in use
e) longevity
f) monthly or yearly costs
2) What is the background of the operators?
a) business or pleasure
b) age
c) schooling
d) economic status
3) Who are the people who actually use these systems?
a) age
b) reason for use
1) messages
2) files
3) product support
4) corporate business
4) What is the geographic diversity of these systems?
5) Do hobby systems represent a force in the marketplace?
We will be able to answer these questions only with the
cooperation of System Operators (SysOps), callers and any other entity
that may have use for the results that will include SysOps, commercial
interests, publishers, government and academia, as well as the public
in general.
Census forms will be made available in both hard copy and
electronically on August 1, and should be returned to us by US Postal
Service no later September 15, 1992. The results will be available on
or about November 1, 1992.
